The Judge Decrees!

March 17, 2010 | Author: Matthew | Filed under: Kata,Martial Arts,Quizzes and Games,karate

Hey everyone. I’m currently working on a little project for the site, so I thought I’d do a short post here outside my normal rigamarole.

Let’s pretend, just for a moment, that you’ve found yourself on the wrong side of the law. You’re a troublemaker, a scoundrel, and it’s finally caught up to you. Now you find yourself standing in front of the judge as he is about to drop the gavel on you.

For your bad behavior, he has sentenced you to a cruel and unusual five part punishment. But, in a rare twist of kindness, he is letting you make some choices regarding your own fate. Here are your tasks:

1. Choose one, and only one empty hand kata to practice for the rest of your life.

2. Choose one, and only one martial arts movie to watch for the rest of your life.

3. Choose one, and only one weapon to study for the rest of your life.

4. Choose one, and only one martial arts book to read for the rest of your life.

And, just when you thought you had enough, the judge pushes you into a time machine and states:

5. Choose one, and only one martial artist throughout history that you’d like to study with for a year!

Fate has been cruel, but record your answers in the comments below!

Lurkers (people who read blog posts but tend not to comment), this is a good chance for you to make an appearance. Let me know your thoughts! And you commenters who I haven’t seen in awhile, get back in here. You’re going to make me squeeze out a single tear if you stay M.I.A. for much longer. Also if you are a fellow blogger, feel free to use this concept if you need a little something for your blog today.

Martial Artist: Maybe Bruce Lee, he was very much ahead of his time and maybe I could learn a thing or two about teaching and Charisma!

    1. Kata I would not be able to pick one at this time yet. I would probably pick a 6th Dan Kata because they tend to be difficult but not hurt the joints too much.
    2. The Last Samuri, I really like that movie

    1. Empi (toughest question)
    2. Kill or be Killed (impossible to find)
    3. Tonfa (sword would be cooler, but Tonfa more practical)
    4. This is Karate (covers everything. almost)
    5. Mas Oyama (a true master, effective style and a true badass)
  • Somewhat unrelated - Matt didn't you post a question asking what we would do if someone tried to hold us up while we were training?

    Apparently, that happened...

  • Hooo wow. Yes I did. I asked it as a vehicle to get people thinking about what kind of weapon (if any) they might reach for and how they would go about using it.

This is a great link - i'll have to share it on facebook, etc and give you an e-nod for finding it.

    1) My first thought would be O´Naihanchi, but thinking again, id´rather go with Sanchin, since it contains very great personal development, as well as physical.
    2) Fight club, yeah, not a strict martial arts movie, but I dont know that many...
    3) Apart from my Te, other than that - The Tonfa.

  • Coming out from lurkerdom once and for all. Nice post, btw.

    1. The current form I'm working on right now. I believe it's spelled Pyuang Ahn 5. We tend to call it 5th advanced form.

    2. The Karate Kid

    3. Escrima

    4. Hmm...I really haven't read many martial arts books. I have heard good things about "The Book of Five Rings" though, so I'll go with that.

    5. I'd absolutely love the chance to spend a year being taught by the grandmaster of my association -- back when he was actively teaching.
  • thanks for decloaking ariel!
  • 1. I don't know any kata, as we don't really do them. However, assuming I had a partner, I'd do Tai no henko.

    4. It's not exactly a published book, but I have a hand written book about the philosophy of martial arts written by my grandfather..

    5. Hirokazu Kanazawa , 10th dan Karate master !
  • I can't say I know what the answers to these questions are, but I'll do my best.

Kata - Hakutsuru - Ronin19 asserts that it's all you need
Movie - Fearless - I really enjoyed it but don't know too many other movies... Do I have to watch it every day?
Weapon - Knife - This one I can answer with absolute certainty
Book - The book of 5 rings - It comes highly recommended
Martial Artist - Eyal Yanilov - Head of my federation, and also the first name that popped into my head...
  • Cool question, Matt!
    1. Kata: Senchin/Seiuchin
    2. Movie: "Fearless
    3. Weapon: Tonfa

  • 1. Bassai Dai. I don't actually know the kata yet, it's on my next grade but I like watching others perform it and I'm looking forward to learning it.
    2. The last Samurai - I never get bored watching this. I also like the more art house films like Kung Fu Hustle.
    3. Bo. Starting to get the hang of this now so it would be nice to have the time to really get proficient with it.
    4. Bunkai-Jutsu by Ian Abernethy. I reading this at the moment and it will take me a year (or longer) to really absorb everything he has to say!

Well, I'm not a karate guy, but I'll try to answer as best I can:

    1. I don't know any Kata. Don't exist in BJJ, so I guess I'd have to say give me a very, very difficult one. If it's the only one I get to work on for a year, I'd want to get something with some depth to it.

    2. Martial arts movie is a toughie, but I'd pick Kill Bill, although I'm a big fan of Seven Samurai, Yojimbo and other classic samurai movies.

    3. Does the Gi count? In BJJ, the gi is as close as we get, used for grips, handles, as a means to control the opponent and often to choke the opponent to submission or unconsciousness. If that doesn't count, I'll take a pair of escrima sticks.

    4. Book: Jiu Jitsu University by Saulo Ribeiro

    5. Takeda Motsuge was a master of fusen ryu jujutsu, who apparently soundly defeated Kano's top guys by, as the story goes, failing to offer them any advantage standing by actually sitting down at the beginning of every match where he defeated his opponents easily on the mat. His influence led to the development of newaza in judo and as far as I can tell eventually led to the development of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (along with Bartitsu through Yukio Tani which has been recently popularized in the Sherlock Holmes movie). I'd love to spend a year with THAT guy! :)
  • Thanks for putting the BJJ spin on it Steve!

    1. Gonna cheat...Hakutsuru. I currently look at it as a 'compilation' kata for performance. Not my favorite...but hey...stuck with ONE?

    2. Easy. 'Seven Samurai'.

    3. Bo. Enough material to last a lifetime.

    4. The Bible. Perhaps not specifically a 'martial' book, but every student of martial ways should develop their inner self.

    5. My current teacher.
