Fighting with Tonfa – Techniques and Handling Methods

Although I occasionally read this blog, I've never commented before. In regards to the tonfa (specifically it's L.E. Application), I find it to be greatly “lacking”, in both effectiveness, and ease of application. This opinion is based on my own experience with it's use, training and comparison with a “simple” straight baton. I hear the argument for the PR-24 (and it's variations) on a constant basis (most often from non-L.E. Persons). Much like the “pepper-spray”, it is often department mandated that it be carried (but is rarely implemented, for various reasons). It's #1 use, is as a “door knocker”.

They are a very enjoyable weapon. Just don't swing too close to anyone's head for awhile. haha.

I've always wanted a pair of Tonfu, they're probably the weapon I'd like most to learn how to use.

Actually, L.E. “does” train officer's in the application of restraint and escort positions (with the PR-24 and it's variants). But frankly, it's easier, and faster to apply empty-handed restraints. Virtually every technique taught requires a degree of compliance on the part of the suspect. The important factor(for effective application of tonfa techniques) that L.E. Doesn't “apply”, is that the tonfa, is designed to be utilized as a “set” as opposed to individually as the PR-24 is issued (and with good cause). Over “half” of the (presumed) “effectiveness” of it, is the “intimidation” factor. They've done a good job of selling the supposed “striking” power of it, but the problem is, is that it DOESN'T have the same(or even as much) “effectiveness” as the straight baton. The training time for the straight baton is (easily) half that of the PR-24. The “Rodney King” video was a perfect example (of the PR-24's “ineffectiveness”). If he had been “pummeled” in the manner he was, with “straight” batons, he would of likely been killed, if not suffered MUCH greater injury than he did. There simply isn't the energy transfer into the target (with the PR-24) that there is with the straight baton (hit a bag with the tonfa, using the “infamous” swinging strike, it will always “bounce” back, thus, minimal transfer of energy “into” the target).
