Fully agree annacalvin82, I think that having a phased approach will work if the woman has the mace or whatever in her hand while walking to the car as well as having some self-defense/karate/whatever training along with awarness and such. You are quite right to point out that having a tool in one's purse is useless if one is attakced!

This is a very interesting post.

Personally, I think having multiple self-defense methods makes sense. My only concern with these products that people (especially women) may buy them to feel a sense of security as opposed to really preparing to use them to stop an assault.

My point here is that any of these tools are only good if they are in your hand the moment you are attacked.

I do not blame a woman for purchasing any of these items. However, I think additional unarmed self-defense training is probably a good idea since women are often attacked by someone they know. It means that she will have to be ready to REACT instantly.

I am glad you put up this post because it makes me want to do more research on some of the products offered by this company. I read on another site that tasers are not always effective at hurting an attacker. I want to get a broader perspective of these tools.

To extend the idea, perhaps eating something that would make you viciously gassy might be a good defensive measure.

That's an excellent idea - the coffee gives you ample time to run away or follow up with a few techniques.

My friend once used a cup of hot coffee from a coffee machine as a self defense tool - poured it into his attacker's face. It happened on a deserted tram station, now he always buys one when traveling at night alone:) My point is that it is always good to look around for some tools in case you get into a "situation". It is even better to carry a small knife in a holster under your T-shirt, like I do when traveling at night:)

It is very true, you have no idea what situation you might be in or what you might have handy and need to defend yourself. And, the "badguys" are very good at catching you at a difficult moment to react in. But, don't count yourself out either. I heard about a elderly woman several years ago that fought off a would-be carjacker with a common item she had in her car...her anti-theft device. I'm sure we all remember "The Club", right? :D
