Self Defense Tools

August 25, 2009 | Author: Matthew | Filed under: Martial Arts, Recent Events, modern arts, self defense

When it comes to self defense tools, I’m not a true expert (I’ve never been zapped by a taser nor have I been sprayed with mace). However I’ve managed to hook up with a team of REAL experts – TBO Tech Self Defense Tools.

When dealing with self defense, you never know what situation you’ll find yourself in or what you’ll have on hand. That’s exactly why I am such a big advocate for unarmed self defense. Even gun owners can’t be locked and loaded all the time.

That being said, I’m also a proponent of tilting the odds in your favor as best as possible. Real life isn’t like the MMA Ring and you don’t need to tap a guy out or go three rounds. The sooner you can resolve a dangerous situation, the better.

It’s that mindset that drives the people at TBO Tech, and fuels them to find the most innovative self defense tools around. For any readers who have been toying around with the idea of upping their self defense options, keep on reading.

Some Uncommon Tools

You know about tasers – they can take a rough looking attacker and turn him into a twitching pile. But check out THIS taser:

“Hello? Ohh hi 950,000 volts. What? You want to talk to this creep getting too hands-on with me? Ok.”

Just in case that is too subtle for you, I’d like to recommend this:

That is bear spray. Walk around with that in the holster and you’ll get some respect.

Other Neat Things

TBO carries a wide variety of products. They have a lot of cool surveillance equipment, ranging from nanny cams to pen recorders. There are also really useful home security products. It’s worth a minute or two of your time to go browse around and see if there is anything that catches your interest. They also also offer a 90 day guarantee on any product you buy, just in case you want to try something out.

Special Offer

As a way of welcoming ikigaiway readers, TBO Tech is offering 10% off of your purchase. Just use the code ‘ikigai‘. That’s a darn good deal!

  • To extend the idea, perhaps eating something that would make you viciously gassy might be a good defensive measure.

My friend once used a cup of hot coffee from a coffee machine as a self defense tool - poured it into his attacker's face. It happened on a deserted tram station, now he always buys one when traveling at night alone:) My point is that it is always good to look around for some tools in case you get into a "situation". It is even better to carry a small knife in a holster under your T-shirt, like I do when traveling at night:)
  • That's an excellent idea - the coffee gives you ample time to run away or follow up with a few techniques.
  • It is very true, you have no idea what situation you might be in or what you might have handy and need to defend yourself. And, the "badguys" are very good at catching you at a difficult moment to react in. But, don't count yourself out either. I heard about a elderly woman several years ago that fought off a would-be carjacker with a common item she had in her car...her anti-theft device. I'm sure we all remember "The Club", right? :D
  • Ahh yes - get whacked by that piece of solid metal would certainly discourage any further trouble.

Can I get one to scare off the UPS man?
  • I'd love to see the bear spray in action, so long as I am not the recipient.
  • FoxyCitrus
I should specify - I want the bear spray to ward off the UPS man's advances.
  • Self defense tool? Go to Home Depot and check out a briar axe. Now THAT''s a self defense tool.
  • Haha - I don't think they sell those at TBO...but that doesn't make it any less of a good idea.
  • Hi Matt,

I've always said one should hedge their bets and use a layered self-defense strategy. While I think hand to hand combat would be my first choice, it would not be beneath me to use whatever tool is at hand to win an altercation.

This includes, karate, mace, staff's, umbrellas, dogs, a secure home, playing possum, running (not really an option for me anymore as I'm not that fast), and even rocks!

I especially think women should carry something in their purses as they are often at a strength/size disadvantage!

    I'll check this site out...

This is a very interesting post.

Personally, I think having multiple self-defense methods makes sense. My only concern with these products that people (especially women) may buy them to feel a sense of security as opposed to really preparing to use them to stop an assault.

My point here is that any of these tools are only good if they are in your hand the moment you are attacked.

I do not blame a woman for purchasing any of these items. However, I think additional unarmed self-defense training is probably a good idea since women are often attacked by someone they know. It means that she will have to be ready to REACT instantly.

I am glad you put up this post because it makes me want to do more research on some of the products offered by this company. I read on another site that tasers are not always effective at hurting an attacker. I want to get a broader perspective of these tools.
  • Fully agree annacalvin82, I think that having a phased approach will work if the woman has the mace or whatever in her hand while walking to the car as well as having some self-defense/karate/whatever training along with awarness and such. You are quite right to point out that having a tool in one's purse is useless if one is attakced!
  • Absolutely John. The romanticized 'these fists are all I need' mindset is a great way to put yourself at a needless disadvantage.
