You're quite right about Nakamura Sensei John. That's how the collection of kata began in Okinawa Kenpo, and also why it has a pseudo-generic name (the way of okinawa hand), so that all the different karate practitioners could come under one umbrella. The kata collection increased even more when Odo Sensei combined a Kobudo program into the mix.

I think every kata person has to balance out learning kata and then finding ones that speak to them and specializing a bit, especially if there are many in the system.

In Isshinryu we have a total of eight karate kata and seven kobudo. I can't even fathom 51.

Nakamura-sensei supposedly was against the idea of different karate styles and at one point tried to consolidate them. To do that, maybe he felt that the removal of certain kata would be like throwing the baby out with the bath water. In contast, the founder of my style actually eliminated some of the forms he acquired in Goju and Shorin-ryu.

One school of thought says it takes a lifetime to master a single kata. Even in my system you need half a dozen through brown belt. Quite a dilemma.

BBM: good term - tactile learner. As for reading something right before you go to bed, I definitely agree. I think that's where the whole 'sleep with the book under your pillow thing came from', because you jsut read it and the firmness of the book keeps it implanted in your subconscious. although that's just a guess.

Kuma Sensei: Thank you! Appreciate you stopping by!

The only thing missing in this post is the title, "Dear Black Belt Mama." Getting acquainted with the (I believe) 19 I should already know has been interesting to say the least.

For me, (and you already know this), I need repetition and I do like to run through the whole thing, over and over and over and over again.

When I was getting my Master's in Ed I had many classes about the different learning styles, etc. I am definitely a tactile learner. I have to do it to get it, so kata is great for people like me once it's in there to a point. I also learned that doing something or reading something you want to remember right before you go to bed is highly beneficial. For some reason (and I don't remember the technical stuff), it makes it stay in there better. Definitely true for me, which is probably why I say my prayers and then shift into mental kata before drifting off to sleep.

This could also explain why I woke up kicking and punching on the sofa when I was abruptly awakened by the husband the other night.
