I actually never gave consent to display my picture... So now I'll have to sue you and take that new car.

seriously though,

well written article mattsan! You are a very competent weapons practitioner (not sucking up, not sucking up, not...) and your advice on the matter is always well warranted.

P.S. You may use my pictures of me getting PWND by you any time you wish.

Krista: I agree that kobudo is an excellent augmentation to traditional martial arts training. And of course for those people who love weapons it can stand on its own.

Hojo Undo is very well known and respected as a Goju Ryu tool of training, but it does appear elsewhere as well. In fact, the popularity of Higaonna Sensei has helped it spread. We have one black belt in our school who uses hojo undo on a routine basis, and some of the rest of us try to do it as well. It certainly can help with the demands that weapon training can put on the body.

Massimo: Thank you as always for your visit! Hopefully the next time you are hanging out at the dojo you can play around with different ways to use the bo.

Steph: A vast bo world awaits you, haha. It's a great weapon that provides some frustration early on, but is very rewarding in the long run.

BBM:Yes very much so. During bunkai I try to utilize what would make sense in the context of the attacker, not just what the defender needs to do next to stick with the kata pattern.

As for our kata, yes - most of what we do is in the full length position. There are instances of thirds (shimagiri bo ni for example), but they tend to be in the vast minority.

Elias:Napolean Dynamite definitely whips out a couple 'bo staff' quotes. Funny stuff. I also love Rex Kwon Do. Also, thank you for reminding me about that article, I should link to it in the post.

Nice and useful post Matthew,
It helped me to understand a bit more about using a bo, that I consider a very practical weapon but that I have hardly any practice in its traditional kobudo style.
