I think the guy was slightly afraid but he handled the situation quite well and showed admirable restraint. I don't think I would have allowed the provocation to go on as long though and I would have done more than punch him! Idiots like that deserve all they get. In some situations it is smarter to diffuse the situation immediately rather than trying to escape or wait, thus making things worse.
