I will add one thing. For sure sword training is good for developing a sense of distance, i will add that boxing also is good in that slipping punches just enough to avoid them is taught without 'over' slipping them.

I hardly believe you developed your mai through fear of the shinai, as I myself, have learned what little distancing I know through fear of the kumi-bokken during 2 man waza.  I mean....
