I am a beginner. First time sparring I broke my right foot along the little toe line. Months ago and still hurts. Next time I suffered injury to my left foot. Next time all but broke my left hand...next time re-injured same hand.<br>What I learned is that you don't have to be superman while sparring. You don't need or want to 'block' lightning fast roundhouse kicks with your hands...the hands will lose every time. Being tense is 'definitely' a detriment. And don't feel like you have to counter every technique your partner throws at you. Evasion is as much a part of the game as offensive. And also I have learned...it IS a game...it is a sport...there are rules.

Excellent post and great suggestions! I think the biggest tip you can give to a beginner is just to get out there and start sparring. The first month or so of sparring, a martial artist is usually so nervous that they have trouble concentrating. You get better and better over the years.
