This post is 3 years old - way before the full information about producers and actors was released. In fact, we didn't even know Jackie Chan was involved. All that was revealed was that Will and Jaden were pushing the project forward.

Since you chose to comment about this post now, you have the full movie information available to you. As a staunch feminist, I'm disappointed you didn't include Susan Ekins in your statement, an Executive Producer of the project who undoubtedly had even more influence over the movie than Jada Pinkett Smith. We also can't assume that any of the producers had a 'sensitizing' impact on the movie (that is gender profiling). Instead, we should thank the director for the ultimate quality of the product.

I looked up this link because I am commenting about how uplifting the movie is/was. I have watched the movie about 4 times now, the first at the theatre with one of my children. I was expecting a horrid remake and was completely shocked when I was treated to breathtaking cinematography and a story that speaks right to the heart of many children (and others) who must be uprooted from the familiar and experience culture shock along with it. I am disappointed, too, as a staunch
feminist, that when the author of this article talks about Jaden and his producer father, Will Smith, that Jada Pinkett Smith (also producing) does not merit mentioning. I am quite sure this woman's sensitive touch towards the needs of all children is branded on this movie, as well. Jaden's acting and athleticism stands alone...as does the cinematography and great editing.

It's cool that you're willing to give it a go Scout. Most of the bashing is coming from a reaction out of their approach more than of the movie itself. They are taking a movie franchise that, like you said, means a lot to a lot of people and are trying to milk the last few coins out of it. If the new movie were true to the series this might not be so objectionable, but what you've got here is a movie that has nothing to do with karate and is being called 'karate kid'.

This is another example of hollywood not taking the time to create something original and instead piggybacking on an existing franchise. It's the remake duldrums.

Actually, I think its not such a bad idea honestly

In our day that movie inspired many of us...and today, our kids watch what we saw and all most of them see is "one of mom or dads old flicks". Spin out the new one, and no, its not a remake persay, its a spinoff from the original actually, a continuation of the basic storyline in a different direction, and they get a glimpse of what we saw

Do I think its the same? No, not really, but Im not going to bash anyone or anything before giving them a chance, it really doesnt make sense to flame on a movie or the actors for it until youve seen the movie, or at least, thats how Ive always viewed it, give them a chance before just dumping em in a pop, none yall have seen it yet, so I dont understand why the bashfest:/
